20 Year old Butia Capita reduced to central spear only

Post by nicebutdim »

My huge "tough as old boots" or so I thought palm, has only one very firm central spear left after last winter. All the leaves got badly burned, the 8 foot spear is very solid and hasn't moved all summer ,not opened a bit despite being heavily fed and watered.I am wondering whether it's a waste of time feeding and also as the spear is newish I suppose it will need protecting from the winter. It has not had any protection at all has this palm.I imagine it is getting late now to expect any movement.Am I alone with this problem?

One of my Erios did nothing until Tuesday this week when it finally pulled  , I just wish I'd sawn it down at the same time as I did the other as that one is making a recovery :D

I wouldn't rush to fertilize a resting palm, especaily after a set back. I'd be more inclinded to make sure there isn't any issues with fungus etc. It'll grow when it's good and ready provided there aren't any health issues.

Cheers, Barrie.
