Palm roots

Post by ianmck »

I have some pots of a few types of germinated palm seeds. The pots are 13cm deep and the roots are coming out the holes in the bottom of the pots but they have not sprouted leaves yet. Should I repot them into deeper pots now or would it be best to wait for a few leaves first?

Don't disturb them, wait for them to shoot then repot them.

I disagree.

There are varying theories on what time of year to repot is best, pre or post dormancy, but if they are inside and kept at a temperature that keeps them from becoming fully dormant then I'd repot into larger pots now.

If the roots are coing out of the bottom of the pot they will be air pruned over time. The plant builds a healthy root system forst to provide it with energy to build top growth so repotting into nutrient rich compost now will provide it with exactly what it needs and maintain the roots it has already developed.

Ditto to Goggle. Repotting (if done carefully) doesn't disturb the roots to any significant extent.
