bamboo veg. propagation

Post by miketropic »

I was watching a video about the bamboo industry comming along in India and it looked like they were propagating from cut culms. they would cut a culm into 7 or 8 parts lay it sideways in the ground. cover it and wait for it to pop up. after it had a bit of leaves on it they dug it up cut the old culm away and planted the shoot with a nice root ball on it. I wasnt aware you could do it this way and if you can I would like to know more. anyone ever tried this? anything special that needs to be done with the old culms before there put in the ground? seems like a good way to propagate without having to dig heavy tough root balls.

Hi, unfortunately this only works with tropical species. If you grow Arundo donax, however, it can be propagated in this way, by laying cut sections of culm in water.
