Anyone have any idea how to germinate Papaya?

Post by carolpz »

I have a pile of seeds from a couple I bought in the supermarket and would like to germinate a few if possible. It's a lovely tree, they had one at Tregrehan but cut it down as it became too lage for the greenhouse. :(

I found them to germinate real easy, I havent done any for a few years but I would have used the baggie method and put into the airing cupboard.
Its not the germinating thats the problem, its keeping them going through winter.
They are very fast to grow so makes a nice plant in one season.

They germinate very easily, just put it in soil, on a window sill or something and it will come up within 2 weeks, like Adrian says it's keeping them growing that is the difficult part.

Im growing the mountain paw paw this year and that one is supposed to be a bit hardier so we'll see.
It will winter in the frost free greenhouse but Im not sure if that will be enough.
I have found this one to hate being moved, it was given to me as a small, this year germinated plant and dropped its leaves in my conservatory, it soon grew more but again dropped its leaves when moved to the greenhouse, again as it went outside.
Its pretty much a given that it wasnt moved again

I must say that the mountain paw paw does look a lot stronger but looks arent always a reliable hardiness test

I might have this mixed up but I think Martin had one flower (could have been his Manihot though :? )

that would be just my luck if i'd given away the only girlie one I grew! They're worth growing for the foliage alone though

That is a Papaya Darren, not sure from the pic if the standard one or mountain type. I think the Mountain type is a smaller, more compact version.
