,temp varies between 22 and 30 ish in there
MH,

Can an airing cupboard maintain enough heat overnight?

Also these Phoenix canariensis_CIDP that refuse to germinate must be ok. I tried in lukewarm water and no messing straight to the bottom.

The day/night cycle helps in germination. There is considerable dispute about that, but I have always adopted the day/night regime because that's what happens in the wild.If I leave the door closed on my airing cupboard, the temperature would stay around 28c all night because the hot water tank in there stays hot all night.I turn off the tube heater in there & open the door for 8-9 hrs.

Sanatic,a good seed/cutting compost should have little or no nutrient.A lot of people fail beacause they use multi-purpose,it's as it says on the bag multi-purpose,but it doesn't do any of the jobs really well, but for the average gardener, this isn't a problem. For more specialist plants, then it can become a problem.

But jokes aside. I thought the seedling would come out the groove not side on.

Sanatic,if it works for you, carry on doing it.You know the old saying,'don't fix something that ain't broke'.

I'm only suggesting what I do,but there is always more than one way of doing a thing.

Kata. My shoot certainly hasnt come out the side. :-) I have done some research on the seed and germination. Apparently the root comes through the bottom first then when the root is well established the spout will then come through the top but it needs a certain amount of nutrients before this happens.

So you didn't forget Darren and leave your communis outside like I did then. It's a lovely shade of brown now and got a nice shine to the leaf  I love this time of the year as now is the time I normally see the first sign of a flush (normally consisting of one) on my indoor ones. Mine have already started or getting ready to start :D

Well done Sanatic on your germination, you seem to be doing well on all your seed germination. :D

Thanks Di Most of it is all thanks to my heated prop really. Its only my cycad and BOPs that were done the old way. I have been very lucky though on my germination rate. Cant wait till they all get well established so I can put pics on the site.

I cheated and bought some already germinated from Benny on David Ison's website. I can recommend these guys if you get fed up of waiting. They're always good plants, cheap and reliable.
