Re: Winter protection
Started to bring some palms indoors now, Brahea amarta, Robusta, Cycas Revoluta are the first in even though the latter has an almost 2ft trunk. The really small waggys & fortunei are also in. I have many waggys planted around the garden but these will be protected. The ones i'll leave last to bring in are the large Capitata & Chilensis as these will stay potted till next season. I have several Chamerops, vulcanos and others in this family which i may try outside with some protection. Hopefully the big palms are old enough to take care of themselves!!, although if the weather gets a bit tasty i will treat them to some fleece balls around the growing point. karl.

Re: Winter protection
I know that Melissa and Keith suffered tremendous losses last December, including many Cacti and Agave, and a few very large Dicksonia antarctica. It seems the protection was good for most winters, but not a prolonged very deep freeze. Simple fact is, it is very difficult to protect against the type of weather we had early last December. Stopping heat loss is one thing, but with such cold, for so long, you really need heat input as well.
Let's just hope last December was a one off
