Catalpa - Leaves bleaching and turning brown

Post by JungleNuts »

Hi folks ...
Over the last 3 or 4 weeks our Catalpa leaves have started losing their colour and eventually developing brown spots, example here:
Catalpa Leaf.jpg
But in terms of the rest of the plant, the new leaves are looking healthy ... and she certainly hasn't slowed down any in terms of throwing out new leaves:

She is in a pot, but gets plenty of water, and is in pretty much full sun (albeit dappled at times from a couple of Trachycarpus fronds overhead) ... We think it may be scorching from the wind we've been having .... and are tempted to (try) to find a more sheltered spot in full sun ... it's only her 2nd year with us having rescued the plant from an uncaring nursery so we haven't had experience of this plant in full swing as looked very sorry for herself last year .... Any idea's ?
All guidance greatly appreciated .....

In a pot? It'll be a nutrient deficiency. A tree like this would normally have roots spreading a couple of metres radius in all directions, and down to around 50-60cm deep, to access soil nutrients. In a pot, what nutrients there are soon get washed out through the drain holes.

So either plant it out (by far the best), or put it in a new, larger pot with fresh soil and give it a dose of fertiliser and foliar feed fairly often.

Thanks Conifers ..... stupidly we didn't think of that, and its the same pot she was in when we got her ..... even with a dose or two of food, given the amount of watering we've all had to do the last couple of months, as you say, any nutrients would soon leech away ....

Yeah agree with Conifers. The leaves are very pale too, they should be dark green. Move to a deep pot with lots of rich compost and grit
