Heliconia rostrata took minus 6 and looks red and healthy

Post by nicebutdim »

Always been under the impression they were delicate, could have avoided many a row if I had known.Mine was cut down to a foot high ,dug up and put in a dustbin in the garage with the roots wrapped in an old towel and a bundle of fleece on top and forgotten.I can't believe it survived the cold period ,I hoped it might cling on and have a mass of damage at the least but to see it like this is amazing.

Trying to reduce the size of my pics, resized to 600x500 pixels but this is still too big.How many pixels make a kilobite? how do I get down to 600 kb ? which is the maximum size.Windows 7 resize only refers to pixels and not kb in referring to size

Open the pic in photoshop or similar; click 'save as', and from that, chose a fairly low quality setting, maybe 3 or 4 (max in photoshop is 12). That way you can still have a fairly large file in pixels width, but with small size in kb. Select a new pic name before saving, so as not to kill off the original.

mmmm..... you have to be careful with digging out and damaging roots. I'm not sure about rostrata specifically, but after I dug schneideana out, someone from the US on facebook, said that they do not like root disturbance, and he was right. I lost all the stems and it did very little the next season. Having said that the tough cold tolerant unnamed one does not mind too much, but I've never cleaned the soil from the roots like you have.
Best regards
Dave
