Don't know anything much about this plant apart from it's supposed to be hardy to about -7 deg. C so might be okay on the south coast and other mild areas.
Anyone ever managed to grow one?

Methinks you'd be better off sticking to Embothrium coccineum - closely related and very similar, and about ten degrees hardier.

It was googling the Chilean flame tree that made me discover the Alloxylon.

Ive seen this trying to survive in Hobart and it was a rather dismal specimen, could be worth trying in a large tub and into a greenhouse for winter but as Conifers states the Embothrium is both more showy and hardier than this one.
