I cant speak for up North but it doesnt matter one tiny bit down here on the Costa del Solent.
If you saw how solid and woody a Trachycarpus trunk is then you wouldnt worry too much, if cold is an issue then youre better off protecting the crown than the trunk.
(crown meaning head of leaves and not growing point)
