wrap it up with straw like a Musa basjoo. Sometimes regarded as hardier than M. basjoo.

Ian, i have Basjoo & Sikimensis both in the ground, my first year with bannanas in the ground would a peice of old plastic downpipe with a few holes drilled for ventilation & a breathable fleece bag tied on top do the job? karl.

You need the insulation of a thick layer of straw. I suggest at least 30cm diameter for a single stem, bigger for multiple stems. I always used to use a cylinder of wire netting packed with straw and tied to a stake for support. Wood or plastic just over the top to keep the rain off. Anything like polythene or a drainpipe would keep the stem too damp.
