musa basjoo which we all know to be the hardiest banana is half way down the list.

can any of the more learned nana gentlemen educate me on the other nanas in the list.

Like it says there are a number of other factors at play, most notably the wet. Many of the nanas we grow come from parts of the world that have very cold winters, the difference being that they're also dry winters. For many tropical plants, it's not the cold that kills them, it's the sustained cold dampness.

In other words hardiness is not just how much cold a plant can take but rather how well it can cope with the overall climate.

Interesting that the details of hardiness given on this list are readily qualified below it. I imagine the temperatures represent the lowest recorded extremes for the individual nanas in somewhere like the eastern USA.

A plant enduring these extremes under protection for a few hours up to dawn and bathes in still warm sunshine later in North Carolina is not representative of similar types enduring all day humid freezes in the UK.

Basjoo and Sikkimensis types remain the hardiest for general UK growing. Some of the other varieties listed, such as Cheesemanii and Nagensium may just survive protected under a central heating flume in Central London during the mildest winter in living memory

Sifting through the experiences of nana growers on HTUK would be far more practical.

every time i see a report of a hardy nana i get my hopes up.
i dont know why i know the answer already, basjoo ( and sikkimensis if you are lucky.)
