How to propagate Phlox?

Post by Tom2006 »

I have a lovely white Phlox which I realise isn't the most exotic plant but gives a superb show each year. I've tried to google for help without any luck. Just wondering if anyone knows how I can propagate more from this plant please?

I've been growing and dividing these for twenty-five years, Tom. While exotics have taken over during that time, I've kept a traditional 'cottage border' and varieties of Phlox are a mainstay. A themed blue and white border mixes traditional and tropical with these colours and I grow Phlox 'white admiral' in it.

Lifting and chopping into four quarters and slicing away the remnants of the woody centre will allow a sizeable clump from year one, but will only last two or three years before it needs dividing again. If you break off smaller pieces from the outside of the clump the year one display will be a little thinner but give a superb display every year for the next five, especially if you are generous with the manure and moisture.

Dividing March or October doesn't seem to make any difference.

Thank you for the detailed info. I will have a go at dividing in October.
