Making walkways.

Post by karl66 »

I have a few ideas whilst work is quiet on laying some paths to add a bit more character to my tropicals, i'm going to build a low rock pathway from either single big rocks or locate some old stone walling, anyway once i've sourced the materiali was going to lay a weed membraneover the grass in required area, will this do the job of killing the grass under foot or is it best to cut & turn grass over?. karl.

I would be inclined to spray the grass with Glyphosate first. Otherwise the grass in attempting to grow will push up the fabric which, in the short term, may disrupt your path and dislodge anything light on top of it.

I'm on heavy clay, so I did take the top off my paths so that the paths were a bit lower, and the beds a bit raised, which helps a bit with drainage

Lastly, rotted turf makes very good "loam", so if you can be bothered stripping the turf off, and stacking it grass-side-down, will give you some nice top soil in a year's time.
