Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron) question

Post by leunerj »

Hi all,

I grew this Sequoiadendron from seed about 16 years ago and it's planted in my dad's garden. It took a few years to get established but for the last 10 years has been growing strongly and putting on height and bulk. In the last two years though, I've noticed that the inner foliage - closest to the trunk - is going yellow and falling off. Is this normal? It seems to be most pronounced on the lower branches which makes me think (and hope!) that it's just a natural aging process. The top part of the tree seems fine and continues growing upwards. It's even started producing cones in the last two years! Can anyone shed any light?

Yep, normal, the inner, lower foliage gets shaded out naturally.

someone spraying weedkiller also looks like that.

I have seen very large redwoods at my local park that have foliage literally sweeping the ground around them.

If they're on open lawns in full sun dawn to dusk, yes. But not when surrounded by other plants, and fences, giving additional shade to the low branches.

They are majestic trees but it's too dry here.

Best of luck leunerj icon_thumright Your dad needs a large garden to accommodate this in centuries to come
Best regards
