Plant ID Please Help!!

Post by andycole94 »

Hi all!

I've recently got back from Malta with a selection of different seeds I've picked up from all over the island and I haven't labelled as well as I maybe should have, but have still grown everything I've brought home.
I have one species which has really got me stumped :? If it helps, the seeds were collected from a small tree/shrub with legumes hanging from it which were around 10 inches long, I have no idea what the flowers may look like.

Here's some a picture of a few seedlings at around 4 months old:

As I'm sure your seeing, they do look a lot like acacias or possibly albizias, but I grow many of these, from seed, and nothing is a match.

If any of you have any ideas id be very appreciative. Thanks!!
Blairs

How can you be so sure, as they look like the Acacia seedlings that grow in treeferns.

How big were the seed Andy?

For future reference, take a pic of the tree and seed pods in situ when picking
Best regards

Odds are it is PseudoAcacia - it is super common over the med.

Treeferns come from Australia and hence can be infected with Acacia seedlings as that is natural flora.

Malta has False Acacia/Pseudo Acacia as its natural flora.

Edit
It is invasive over much of Southern Europe and parts of the UK, apparently.

If it is a pseudoacacia indeed, you may want to not invest too much time or space in it, it's deciduous and doesn't take advantage of our mild climate (i.e. it's much hardier than it needs to be). Plantfiles list it as hardy to zone 5a icon_thumbdown

Don't know, couldn't get the pic to load. Can you post it direct in the thread, rather than hotlinking to a dodgy site?

These are most defiantly false acacia's, you can tell by the contorted bark.
