Thanks karl.

Candytufts, they're beautiful quite tall growing flowers. You can grow from seed in spring and they'll flower by late summer. Or grown from seed in about september they'll be flowering by the may after. I sown mine in sept so will post pics somewhere on here in may.

Fatsia japonica - how about 1 of each variety?
Rodgersia - there are several varieties worth growing (Henricii for example)
Rheum Palmatum
Choiysa Tenata - goes a dark shade of green
Brunnera - any variety
Mahonia
Any of the red leaf Canna will like the semi-shade bed.
Kerria japonica
Some of those will prefer beds on the moist rather than dry side of course.

You can not have enough ferns, you need a C Medullaris and sink the pot in to the ground.

That's the problem I don't!, apart from part of the house which already has too many , it has to be plants that can just get on with it , I suppose one of them could be made into a complete hosta bed although it could turn into a slug fest. karl.

I think one of the best shady borders I have seen on here is in Simbas garden. Planted with lots of hardy evergreens looks great and is hassle free.http://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/v ... &start=495

Agree with Brendan. One of the big leaved rhododendrons would look great, macabeanum or similar.

Wow Simba's garden is great. I need to copy some of that plantings. I have Fatsia spidersweb and have really wondered how to work it in. It looks great in his pics.brendan wrote:I think one of the best shady borders I have seen on here is in Simbas garden.
