Which is the top

Post by TheHiphopfarmer »

Hi all,

I’ve bought a load of colocasia, alocasia and xanthasoma from the good people at Himalayan gardens . I’m new to these plants and I’m not sure which end of the bulbs and rhizomes are the top. Some have a growth on one end and a flat end on the other. I’m not sure if the growth is the new plant or the flat end is where last years growth has been cut away. Some videos I have watched online don’t fully bury the bulbs so I’m hesitant to plant them sideways.
I don’t have a greenhouse so want to start them in pots in my house which is at a constant temperature of 20c.
Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks guys,

At least if they don’t grow I know it’s not because they were upside down!

You could plant the 'AliMac' sideways just below soil level in a wider pot. The result would be many shoots that break into growth all along the length of the rhizome. Although the start into growth would be much slower you would eventually have a very thick and jungly plant.

Nearly all these corms/bulbs/rhizomes will send out roots from just below the growing tip. So leaving the top growing point just above the soil surface will allow maximum number of roots to support topgrowth
