how many pergolas have you got?
i can't put together a mental picture of your garden because the pergolas are confusing me.
how about a video?

Love the pergola at the side of the garden. Looks a really nice spot to sit. The only thing your garden is missing is ... time! Just a few years patience and you'll have the desired height.

I have the big one from the house and then there is a small one over a bench, which tbh was only put there to help strengthen the fence lol. We had no choice but to use metal fence stakes, and i wasn't overly convinced they were strong enough. Now it is solid, so a good job done.
Its only big enough for a bench really, it about 5' deep.
Once the patio is tidy, toys away and house painted (maybe todays job) i will take a better photo.
I got the camera out yesterday and the wife decided the washing was coming out so it was tricky to get photos.
Thank everyone

Looking great Delboy, I said it before and I'll say it again, I do like a man who is good with his hands , clearly you are very good. I think the pergolas look great, the one over the patio it very Tuscan, grow a few grapes vines and you could be in another country. Everything is filling out nicely, such a contrast to what you began with, so very well done to you

Right, heres some extra pics just taken,
Views from 'house pergola', bench pergola/arbour and then views from near the bottom of the garden.
Its not huge, 49' long and 25' wide, having 2 boys aged 5 & 2 (almost) a lawn and garden toys are a must.

Obviously the overhangs on the big pergola will be cut off, it started chucking it down and i just havent got around to it lol.
Thanks Trudy, I want a garden that when you sit out on a sunny day it feels like your on holiday.
We love to eat outside, but our patio got so hot it was uncomfortable, plus we have the worlds most nosey neighbours. The screening makes it a much nicer, private place to relax.
I have planted a clematis armandii on the trellis side that over time should go wild and cover that side.
I contemplated a grape vine, but i wasn't sure how bad they are for dropping fruit? i didn't want a patio covered in squished grapes.

Lovely job there. Looks real tidy which counts for a lot in my book.
A real family garden that works for all of you. Space for kids to play on a safe lawn, shade and privacy for your missus with the pergolas, and some exotics for yourself. Also looks like it would be a good socialising space. Bet you can't wait to do a BBQ or 2.

Thanks Roger, it is a great space, we ate out tonight for the first time since the pergola was built, no nosey neighbours to spy on us and it really had that holiday feeling.....just what i wanted.
The kids love the garden too, im not a fan of swings n slides but its their garden too so i have to share lol.
Ken,
Cheers mate, i planted 3 Hydrangea seemanii back in March, only small £5 ones from homebase but they are apparently everygreen and self clinging.....i just need them to grow.....like yesterday, they got set back in a frost and lost all new growth. My fault for being impatient.
I have about 4 bamboos planted too, but 3 of them are only small. If they weren't so damn expensive i would line the whole fence. I have some taller plants too, ricinus, canna and need to buy a nana or 2.
Re: Del's Garden Project.....one year old. UPDATED
those climbing hydrangeas are just about the slowest climbing plants you can get
and the evergreen ones are not supposed to be all that hardy
should look better when the foliage fills out a bit

Yeah sorry DeeDee your right the part that goes across to the shed will eventually have something growing over it.Deedee wrote:I thought the "overhang" was an arch Del, i would leave it, maybe grow something over it.. I bet you were happy you built the pergola for this hot weather today phew..
The overhang I still need to cut off are the sides, they overhang over the lawn by a good 2 foot.
