Great looking garden Dave,

I love the canopy shots. they remind me when I slipped in the garden and ended up looking up at my Trachi....

Yes, it loved the wet summer of 2012, and the warmth of 2013. Seems to be putting on around 6 to 9" (15 to 25cm)of trunk per year.
romping away! How will you protect as it becomes more of a californian skyduster height?

Also is this the first winter its not gone yellow/lost head?

I suspect, Dave, that the Washy, like the Trachies, have not stopped moving all winter.

It won't get canopy protection now as too tall.

It was defoliated in winters 2001/2, 2008/9, and 2010/11, but suffered no cold damage in 2006/7, 2007/8, 2011/12 and 2013/14

It had the parasol protection in 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Dave B's Blog - Summer 2019 pic with Washie

Post by Dave Brown »

Not updated on here for a while, but this is a pic from the summer.

Compare Washie Washingtonia this year with the earlier pics.

Am I right in thinking that the Washie is now too big to protect any more, Dave?

Yes it's about 18ft (5.5m) tall, but... it is above the super cold ground level feeze area. :)

I was only thinking last night that seeing as we've got Dave b posting again it would be good to see his washy, as it's been a long time since I'd seen it..... Are there any more highlights from the summer? How's the Butia doing these days?

It was severely damaged in 2010 freeze and took 6 years to recover. Finally in 2016 it started to get decent growth, then along came the 'Beast from the East in Feb/Mar 2018 with -9.9C, then storm Emma slammed into the 'Beast' giving 54 mph gales, BUT at -4.9C This was the worst weather combination I've had in 35 years here. Bertie Butia crown pulled in June. I did all the usual H2O2 treatment, but it was a gonna :( Pic here in Jan 2017

My other Butia, Barry, is doing fine, but has more shelter from NE than Bertie had.
