Winter's NOT over yet . . .
Glaucous Gull (from the High Arctic) at Tynemouth today . . .
Re: Winter's NOT over yet . . .
Well, that method of forecasting is probably as reliable as anything the Met Office use.

Not a chance Andy,
That garage to accross from me was pure white with frost.

Nice shot, they very rarely venture this far down.
We are supposed to be having several mild nights averaging around 6/8c but come next week the -cs are forecast again. Back to wrapping things with the fleece jackets. Winter is definitely not over.

Foggy and cold this morning. Just hope the fog clears has I can not see the garden.
Re: Winter's NOT over yet . . .
Most certainly couldn't use a glaucous gull down here for weather predictions. It looks similar to a juvenile herring gull so I wouldn't give it a second glance as they're two a penny

Light sandy-brown wingtips (black on juv. Herring Gull) and pink base of bill (all-black on juv. Herring Gull)flounder wrote: It looks similar to a juvenile herring gull so I wouldn't give it a second glance
Vastly easier than trying to pick out a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull or a juvenile Caspian Gull

Re: Winter's NOT over yet . . .
Looks like Glaucus Gull is due to put in an appearance down here next week
It has been generally too cold for birds to start nesting, so the return to winter will just delay them again. Also as we've only had 3 days of above average temperature in the last month, there is no new growth to be damaged.

Mediterranean Gulls are frequently seen around here but you try and pick one out (without black wing tips) amongt 200 Black Headed Gulls.
Not a rarity but a male Reed Bunting appeared this morning, stayed just long enough for a distant pic and flew off.
