I DID see it today but it was on Survibor which was filmed in the Caramoan Islands.

It was day for the whites; GVWs, Small Whites and Orange tips.

I've seen small white, red admiral and small tortoiseshell over the last month, very poor show really. I was made up today when I saw a large bumblebee on one of my alliums

Several deep blue seen today in the garden, but never land with wings open . The top of the wings are darker blue, but the pic below is of the underside,

You have many species of Butterfly in the UK, Way more than New Zealand.
Here is a photo of a New Zealand Red Admiral Butterfly ( different to the UK one ) that i shot back in 2008.

Seen the first butterfly of the year yesterday a white winged cabbage butterfly, I think theyre called.

Its quite common at this time of the year.
There will be a second brood in August.
Latin name { Celastrina argiolus].

That one goes under a different latin name to the English "red admiral".
I think the one on your picture is Vanessa Gonorilla.
The English red admiral is Vanessa Atalanta.

Thats a mating pair?
The female is the bottom butterfly and the tatty looking male is the top butterfly.
The latin name of this species is Lasiommata megera.
2 other kinds are found on the Continent and they are,
The large wall brown [Lasiommata maera.
And the northern wall brown[Lasiommata petropolitana.

Walls are pretty rare round here now. Not seen one in three years.
