Hardy Tropicals UK

So far I've seen Commas, Small Tortoiseshells, Peacocks. Expect to see Orange Tips, Speckled Woods, Brimstones and Green Veined Whites by now.


What have you seen?

I've seen loads of brimstones, although not in my garden. Peacocks and a comma have been spotted here at the weekend!

Plenty cabbage whites last year which I expect anytime soon.

I tell yas, flikin wildlife here is almost non existent.

So far I have seen a lot of Brimstone butterflies [Gonepteryx rhamni] and a few small whites [Artogeia rapae].

Yesterday in Selbourne I also saw a speckled wood butterfly [Pararge aegeria] and I thought I also saw a red admiral Vanessa atalanta].

So not a bad weekend for butterfly spotting.

Ditto!

Just a couple of Peacocks in my garden so far As a by the by, my Loquat is flowering and is usually covered in honey bees, not seen one !

No sign of them at the moment

The first male specimen of holly blue today flying about in the St denys palm garden.

Latin name [Celastrina Argiolus].

Also a few small whites.

The small Tortishell butterfly seems to be extinct in Southampton as I haven't seen any around here for many years so I would be very interested to find out if other forum members have seen any.

Green Veined whites in the garden today.

Very little so far, the odd Peacock, White and Brimstone.

Clive you an in an enviable location for butterflies. You can practically find most British species down there and many vagrants. There should be Small Blues, Dingy and Grizzled Skippers and Duke of Burgundys?

We Used to have 1000s of them, but like you not seen any over the last few years.

Seen several Comma, Peacocks and Red Admiral. Plus Humming Bird Moths

Kris, there are probalbly some about but apart from a day last week I haven't been able to go looking, first a two week holiday followed by a week of illness and it has been just too cold for some of them to fly. I will get out soon, as you say, this a great place fo them.

Has the small Tortishell butterfly gone the way of the Large Tortishell butterfly [extinct]?

That seems to have happened here in Southampton.

Update on this species from other forum members needed as soon as possible.

I haven,t seen a small Tortishell butterfly here for 10 years.

I used to breed them by the thousands back in the Sixties.
