For the first time this Autumn the islands have received air from the Sahara and not from the North Atlantic. But this late 'mini-scirocco' was something of a rarity as the air was dust-free and there was sparkling visibility.

A high pressure cell crossing west to east over the islands contributed to some interesting local variations in the weather. Combined with an unusually rapid 1.5c drop in the sea temperatures within 24 hours the islands were given exceptionally clear visibility and brilliant sunshine. The gentle easterly breeze that developed as the high pressure transferred to the African mainland gave cool sea breezes on the east coast with temperatures stuck in the low twenties. However, the sheltered south western coasts experienced localised heating as the easterly drift crossing a mountain track dried out the air and sent the temperature into the high twenties. All the while there were very shallow fog banks over the relatively cool seas.
