Re: Another wind storm for January 3rd/4th/5th......
We say Dyke (or Dike) - probably nicked it from you if that's the Dutch word? although I think we are a bit vague about whether a Dyke is the Ditch or the Bank (what the Americans would call a Levee - which I think is the Bank rather than the Ditch in their usage)Exotic Life wrote:They have evacuate a small area in the north where the fear for that the water will come over the "Dike" (Don't know it that is a englisch word).

I wonder what happened to the little boy who put his finger in the Dyke?

Don't have a vid, but you can watch the actual webcam on the sea/beach. It's calmer now I think.kata wrote:EL,

"Dijk" is the dutch word for it, and they are everywhere hereKristen wrote:We say Dyke (or Dike) - probably nicked it from you if that's the Dutch word? although I think we are a bit vague about whether a Dyke is the Ditch or the Bank (what the Americans would call a Levee - which I think is the Bank rather than the Ditch in their usage)Exotic Life wrote:They have evacuate a small area in the north where the fear for that the water will come over the "Dike" (Don't know it that is a englisch word).

We've got some here too, in the Fens (did you guys make them originally, or was it the Scandinavians?). They have great names like "6 mile bottom"
Re: Another wind storm for January 3rd/4th/5th......
Robbin, does the name Rotterdam come from the word 'dam'? (or dyke)?
Re: Another wind storm for January 3rd/4th/5th......
No. It's just the name of the city. I was born in the city next to it, Schiedam. There are many more cities with "dam" in the end. Some of them do have problems indeed with high water like Rotterdam can, but some of them also not.stephenprudence wrote:Robbin, does the name Rotterdam come from the word 'dam'? (or dyke)?

Just searched on this, apparently Rotter means 'Muddy water'. Nice! Sounds just like the Mersey.
Re: Another wind storm for January 3rd/4th/5th......
Not that I know. If i'm right, The Netherlands are number one on the list for defending against water, so I guess most of it are building by ourselfes. Sometimes they want to use the knowledge or even business/people that can build this structures. Good example is New Orleans that was destroyed by the hurricane and want to help by creating structures for defending in the future.Kristen wrote:We've got some here too, in the Fens (did you guys make them originally, or was it the Scandinavians?). Some places the water is quite critical, it happens more but still needed to watch 24 hours a day. There would be people going to get wet feet for sure.

Blimey Robbin!
Let's hope your water levels go down soon.
It's been lovely here today, hardly a cloud in the sky and not much wind either
