Welcome to March 2013
Welcome to March 2013
In 10 days time it will be March 1st and winter 12/13 will officially pass into Spring again.
Lengthening days, shortening nights, higher sun position in the sky and increased sunshine hours. I can't wait to get out into the garden and tidy everything up. Last year's wet weather meant a lot of pruning and weeding just never got done so I am looking forward to a few weekends and the return of a nicely manicured starting point for the years growing season.

Re: Only 10 Days of Winter Left!
I always look at it as Dec, Jan & Feb are winter months, March, April and May are Spring, Summer is June, July and August then Autumn is September, October and November. Those equinox thingys just prolong the misery.jezza wrote:I thought the spring equinox was 20th march?

Ironically we could be entering one of the coldest spells all winter!
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

How does August be in Autumn, that has to be a summer month.

August is a summer month....
On another note, there are probably those saying how many days left in Lent....

Re: Only 10 Days of Winter Left!
Autumn bird migration is active even from late July, when they start southbound movement back towards the wintering grounds - particularly sandpipers, swifts, and of course cuckoos ("In July, away I fly, in August, away I must")kata wrote:Aug, Sep, Oct = autumn

Re: Only 10 Days of Winter Left!
For me.
If I am feeling optimistic:
Spring = April, May
Summer = June, July, August, September
Autumn = October, November
Winter = December, January, Febuary, March
Another way:
More or less...
Winter: When the average temp is consistently less than 7C
Spring/Autumn : When the average temp consistently is above 7C and below 15C
Summer: When the average consistently temp is above 15C
Or If I am feeling particularly negative and wishing I could move somewhere warmer...
Winter = October, November, January, February, March, April
Spring = May, June, July
Autumn = August, September
Summer = Any day where it happens to go above 27C

Re: Only 10 Days of Winter Left!
It's winter as long as it's cold.
But I tend to think of March as spring, you can't guarantee high temps or sunshine but when it is sunny, the sun is guaranteed to rise higher, and that means pleasant daytime heat no matter what the forecast (shade) temperature is.

Re: Only 10 Days of Winter Left!
That would give me about 3 days of summer every 10 yearsrburrena wrote:Or If I am feeling particularly negative and wishing I could move somewhere warmer...
