I'm not sure that the claim of coldest since 1979 is correct now. It was definitely put up on one of the BBC Weather forecasts, but my records are not backing that up

In the west of the UK traditionally, May is the driest, sunniest month of the year, and consequently warmer than the east, however we're looking at some unrivalled cold... Very close to coldest spring on record in some local western areas.

I do remember the winter and spring of 1962 as the winter of late 1962/1963 were the coldest in Southampton since records began.

I didn't keep any weather records in 1962 as I was only 17 years old then and still popping my zitts.

But I can just remember snow showers in March and at least one heavy fall of snow in Southampton in late April but I still think this spring was even worse in spite of the official records saying it wasn't.

The first of my records started in the amazing winter of 1962/63 and I have kept varius records since then right up to the present day.

Maybe the satnav on the weather systems has gone bonkers...

check this: summer in the arctic circle, these are the temps at 7 in the morning and will rise to 30+ in some places today...

Cooled off a bit recently, but I've been really lucky this month, frost-free, and it's been warmer here than anywhere else, average temp is 12.6, way above the national average for May this year, and we've regularly had peak temps in the 20's this month.

Hmm, maybe it's the heat from all that rioting 2 years ago, perhaps the buildings in Sarf London are still burning. :)
