Portsmouth for the most part isn't a 'well off' city & if sea levels rose by 6 metres most of the city would be underwater. Not all places by the sea are full of rich people with 2nd homes or holiday cottages...
Local as in N Ireland, but given that large areas of England and Wales are used for hill farming and in general are considered lower value. Its safe to say that there are no shortage of opportunities. Its not only sea levels that will also rise, so to will the snow/tree line. The state would have to get the finger out. icon_thumright

Fancy trying to rehouse 100 million people from Bangladesh?
You do realise that large parts of Bangladesh are mountainous more than capable of housing its whole population? icon_thumright

The greatest achievement of mankind will always be our ability to wake up each day believing we will live forever, when in fact we are all doomed! ........can't remember who said this, but quite apt. icon_thumright

Simply not true. Only about 10% of Bangladesh (mostly in the southeast corner) is hilly, and none of it mountainous. And those parts that are, have markedly less fertile soils than the Ganges delta floodplain. So they could probably only support about 2% of the population. And you're neglecting the logistics of providing that amount of housing in a relatively short period. Rising sea levels are going to create a gargantuan refugee problem even if only 20% of the people affected survive. Most, sadly, will drown.

I rest my case  icon_thumleft

Not that it will affect us but the Universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate. Eventually everything will be so far apart no life will be able to exist anywhere....certainly not human life.

Rising sea levels have been much less than was originally predicted, about 7.7" in 140 years. This seems due to sea ice reducing in volume as it melts, and that Antarctica is not a land continent, as thought, but a ring of islands holding the ice in place. Effectively the south pole is sea ice as well, although much, much thicker than the North Pole

Not true, as of most recent figures China was rising rapidly and the UK falling slowly. I would not be surprised if ours was now below China, which is shocking , because with the Chinese population at over 1 billion a rapid rising CO2 output is a massive MASSIVE problem, as to the USA they are just a selfish and disgusting race as far as CO2 goes, they are most able to afford to reduce it and just care about money.
It is true; UK at #43, China at #55. That there's over a billion people in China doesn't affect the per-person output. Agree over the USA (#12), though - but look at those Gulf states! Also Australia at #11 needs to do more.
Nope not true Conifers. Look at this graph. Last figures 2010. China is now almost certainly in front of us , we have 60 million they have over 1 billion and if you think that is not horrific or significant I am shocked. I did not say the number affected per capitata output I said over 1 billion with rapidly rising output per capitata is shockingly bad.

From wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Post- ... _Level.png

seems sea levels have risen sightly for the whole of the last 8000 years after the dramatic rise from the depth of the ice age. Most GW believers will only show the last 50 years or so to hide it has been happening all along.

Need to factor in that land is rising too? Still rebounding from the last ice age.

There was a report on sea health issued this week. It makes grim reading. The acidity is rising rapidly because the sea is mopping up the CO2 to compensate for our pollution and the sea is at breaking point.

Agree Nigel. Its going to blow. This is much more than natural cycles as some say.

The microbiotic life in the oceans make up the bulk of the earth's biomass, performing majority of our photosynthesis. That is an area of concern icon_study
