Just read full article and it says worst in 100 years and heavy snow in the south and worse than 2010.

Shame on you Kris, I'm surprised you give airtime to such claptrap. There's a thread like this, quoting the Express, every year.

Coldest winter in 100 years

I read the I or Independent.

I just want to hear a reasoned argument against the forecast.

The reasoned argument is that 'sheeple' buy papers with this headline every October.

But far worse than this the papers have rounded on the poor False Widow Spider, with headlines of "Deadly Spider invasion" and in the Daily Fiction, sorry Star "Flesh-eating spiders coming to a house near you!"

The very least will be a mass extermination of anything with 8 legs, and the worst case people will actually be killed by running away from harmless spiders. Kids walking in the road as a Garden spider has a web across the path etc. icon_thumbdown

Each year, at just about this time there is a 'forecast' of a dreadfully bitterly cold and prolonged Winter. Oh c'mon, let's face it, bad news sells. I believe that I said similar last year and my Winter low was minus 5.8c. We should just do as we must, by preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.

Well if its a bad winter we will just have to deal with it. It's disheartening when you loose plants that you have looked after for years. I'm going to insulate the poly tunnel this year.

Take each day as it comes and have the protection at standby if the worst should happen. :)

Wait and see...everything is possible....highest in Holland + 17C coldest -27C .. both in January
Enjoying a sunny afternoon in the garden is possible in February, or fighting record low deepfreeze...

today a freeze, tomorrow spring, I'm sure there will be lots of rain and grey skies, everything else is just a guess

Absolute crappe is the reasoned argument from me.

If it does turn out to be hellish cold year, it won't be for the reasons the media sets out!

The newspapers are unremitting in their headline grabbing stories, there is no other reason for it.

Yep. No selling newspapers with a headline like " winter could be the coldest ever, but can turn out to be the warmest or wettest ever"

Anyway, a very mild winter with two day of record breaking unexpected deepfreeze can kill more than a slighyly below average winter without records broken

The weather is worryingly lacking mobility , the models keep wanting to show greenland blocks forming, the melting arctic sea ice is allowing high pressure to form where it shouldnt be.
These are all worrying facts.
Will it be worse than 2010 , thats impossible to predict. Will it be bad, also impossible to predict. I would say there is an above average chance of a bad one though.

That newspaper posts the exact same story every year, it turns a real forecast of 'turning a bit chilly, with a chance of ground frosts' into a 'Day After Tomorrow' scenario  They do the same in summer too, with the first bit of warm weather turning into a 'Record breaking Heatwave'...

If anything the silly "forecaster" who makes these predictions is always so far off I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a mild winter icon_thumright
