UK St Jude Storm - severe weather warning 27/28 Oct 2013

Post by Dave Brown »

The Met office has issued severe weather warnings for many parts of the UK for Sunday night into Monday.
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weat ... ionName=se

A very intense low pressure system is forecast to run northeastwards across the country early on Monday, bringing the potential for an exceptionally windy spell for southern parts of the UK. At the same time, persistent, heavy rain could cause some surface water flooding, while the winds will lead to some very large waves around our coasts.

There remains some uncertainty in the timing, intensity and track of the low. However, the public should be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures, bringing disruption to transport and power supplies.

A developing storm is expected to reach the UK later on Sunday. This is expected to run northeastwards, probably across England and Wales during Monday, with very strong winds on its southern and western flanks. There is the potential for gusts of 60-80 mph quite widely and locally over 80 mph, especially on exposed coasts, both in the southwesterly winds ahead of the low centre and west to northwesterly winds behind it.

20 to 40 mm of rain may fall within 6 to 9 hours, leading to localised flooding, especially where drainage is impeded by wind-blown debris.

This warning will be updated Sunday morning.

I would suggest listening to Met office forecasts for the updates as the timing and locations affected could change.

Best to keep mobile phones charged and have a battery radio tuned to your Local BBC station, as that is how emergency information will be given out.

We lost power here for 14 hours after the storm of 1987, but 3 miles up the road they were off for 5 days.
Best regards
Dave

I have already put under cover the few pot exotics that I had outside.

Winds are forecasted to possibly reach 80 mph in Southampton by Monday morning so it may be worst then that in this road where i live .

My palm trees will have to take their chances as they are too tall to tie up but they got through the storm of 1987 and will get through this one.

But its probably good bye to my Basjoos again.

I'm looking at losing more than my Basjoo's most of the stuff in my garden is way above 6ft fence level, and since the council ripped out all the trees and bushes to the back and side of me to build a new Bus lane, I'm totally exposed to South south westerly Blow's.

This is not the storm Pete, it is the depression that has been coming across all weekend. The storm is steaming in tonight.

Reporting from the eye of the storm LOL!
Its 13c here, sunny, a bit of a stiff breeze, as we are overlooking the sea, we can hear the surf today, quite loud.
Barometer dropping, now 994.
There is some surf on the bird bath at the moment!
Waiting for the Big One later!!!! :)

I'm moving all potted plants to shelter from the SW to W, and as many delicate potted plants into the lunar module. The the Lunar Module doors will need securing as are hanging in runners. Heavy concrete planters will be placed either side to stop the wind blasting them off the tracks.

Really in uncharted waters here as are the strongest winds forecast since the Lunar Module was built 18 years ago, although it is pretty windy here at the best of times.

That Depression has already caused damage to a neighbours gable end and the roof on a single story
Not looking forward to tonight

Shall we use this as a Storm Watch thread Dave or start a new Topic ?
