Already several Violent Storm 11s in the shipping forecast, and that's just the start. Could get a bit wild!

Re: Yet another storm
The meto said they predict a low of 927!!!!.....NOT what santa will want.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
Re: Yet another storm
Nearly, but not quite as bad as 10 Jan 1993 - that one went down to 912 or 913 mB, the deepest ever recorded in the N Atlantic. I remember the shipping forecast that day had
That storm ended up blowing away 85,000 tonnes of crude oil from the wreck of the Braer on Shetland, minimising a major environmental catastrophe.
Be interesting to see what tomorrow lunchtime shipping forecast says!
I'd never before, nor since, heard anything worse than 'Storm 10 to Hurricane 12'. There isn't even supposed to be anything above 12 on the scale . . .Rockall, Malin, Hebides, Bailey: Hurricane 12 or more

Re: Yet another storm
Already has wind speeds of close to 100km/hr according to the wind map toy, looks to be a very significant system! Lows of 927hPa! and another one
If we had a low system of that intensity approaching us Id be packing up and moving inland, NOT what you want at Christmas...
Stay safe!

I hope Santa has Turbo Reindeer or he'll be blown away in the storm
Seriously, I wouldn't walk or park anywhere with large trees tonight, and looks like road, rail, ferry and air transport will be disrupted. Travellers have been advised to take extreme care to avoid fallen trees and flooding.
Weather forecaster on BBC video talks of fastest mid Atlantic jet stream he has ever seen, and sucking the pressure out of the atmosphere. Apparently if pressure falls by 24mb in 24 hours it is called a 'weather bomb', but this storm is falling by more than 50mb in 24 hours giving a pressure of 930mb (27.46") !!!!

Wow thats really starting to ramp up! A very well structured and intense cyclone that is, it makes me wonder why these big extra-tropical cyclones arent named like tropical cyclones, especially when they are significant like this one.

Re: Yet another storm 23-12-13
Many of them are getting named now:
10 Jan 1993: Braer Storm (after the oil tanker)
17-18 Jan 2007: Kyrill
4-6 Jan 2012: Andrea
27-28 Oct 2013: St Jude Storm
How they're named: here. But it seems different groups give the same storm different names, there isn't a single naming authority (something the EU hasn't centralised yet!).
But some were also named way back when, like the Grote Mandrenke ('Great man-drowning') back on 16 January 1362 — 25,000 killed
