2013 summary + December stats

Post by madgav »

This is the first full year logged with the new software. 2013 started with a near-normal meteorological winter followed by a spring that would best be consigned to the recycle bin icon_thumbdown Particularly that awful March :( . -3.8C was the coldest temp I have recorded in March (previously -3C) and -1.4C was the coldest I have recorded in April (previously 0C).

2013 then surprised us all by providing what many weren't considering possible - a good summer icon_thumleft . July was just fantastic (even though I spent half of it in Spain) but the rest of the summer was good too.

The warmth continued into the autumn and even after cooling off it has remained airfrost-free right until new year - only the second time I've recorded this (the other was 2011/2012).

I have recorded an overall average for the year which is very slightly below the long term average.

Here are the stats, first for 2013, then for December 2013 (I only log temperature):

Based on Wunderground Kensington, which I think of as a rough approximation of my part of town, although the garden may be much warmer on sunny days.

December 2013
High: 12.9 °C
Low: 1.1 °C
Average: 7.6 °C

19 days in double digits.

2013
High: 32.5 °C
Low: -2.8 °C
Average: 10.9 °C

December 2013 Statistics

December was almost average, perhaps one myth to be busted from my own statistics was that December was mild. Certainly by day December was mild yes, but by night, it was cool, if not cold, with no double figure minimas recorded throughout the month. These cold minimas brought about a roughly average (for the local area) December, in terms of temperatures. Rainfall was above average also, wet, and cold feeling cold by the best term to describe the month. One air frost ensured that December wasn't 'special', but there was a distinct lack of snow, but again, this is not especially unusual for December. All in all a very typically 'modern' wintry month here.

Below are the statistics for my weather station during the month of December

Mean Maximum: 10.1C
Mean Minimum: 4.4C
Overall Mean: 7.25C

Monthly Rainfall total: 69.5mm
Rainfall days: 18
Max rainfall in one day: 15.9mm (23rd December)

Highest daily maximum temperature: 14.3C (15th December)
Lowest daily maximum temperature: 5.6 (12th December)
Highest daily minimum temperature: 7.6C (8th December)
Lowest daily minimum temperature: -0.7C (26th December)

Days with Ground Frost: 3
Days with Air Frost: 1
Days of falling snow: 0
Days of lying snow: 0
Thunder days: 0

Temperature frequency breakdown

Maximum temperature:
5.0C to 9.9C: 11 days
10.0C to 14.9C: 19 days

Minimum temperature:
-5.0 to -0.1C: 1 day
0.0C to 4.9C: 17 days
5.0C to 9.9C: 13 days

Compared to the December CET for Colwyn Bay (81-10 average = 6.05), my average comes in at 1.2C above the CET average, making it an above average month

Im just going to post basic stats for the year for now.. Ill do the more indepth stuff later.

2013 year:

Mean Maximum: 14.2C (just above average)
Mean Minimum: 6.7C (below average)
Mean: 10.45C (not far below average)

Rainfall Total: 650.5mm (average)
Rainfall days: 132 days
Snow: 6 days (29cm total)

Airfrost: 40 days. (top 5 of all time most air frosts without doubt, thanks to two months!)
Ground frost: 76 days (close to a new record I think..)

Thunder: 4 days.

Maximum temperature: 30.8C
Minimum temperature: -4.5C

NB: if it wasn't for the warm summer, it would have been, assuming summer was average, one of the coldest years on record! Similarly, if the winter had been average, it would have been one of the warmest years on record.. shows how extreme it was.
