Severe weather warning: potential for loss of life(12/02/14)

Post by stephenprudence »

This might seem 'Daily Express' like, but this is deadly serious. The met-office have now issued a red warning, the most severe, for parts of North and West Wales, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cumbria. The red warning is for potential gusts up to (and possibly over) 100mph. Winds like this will cause widespread, and severe damage to property, trees and potentially loss of life. There is the potential for a sting jet this afternoon which could deliver gusts over 100mph in this area on it's axis.. power will be lost and major disruption will ensue.

Take care as this may be one of the most severe storms seen for many years in the areas mentioned above.

Daily Express is probably saying gusts of 1000mph today. Yes deadly serious. Flimsy structures may simply blow away, and high sided vehicles could become horizontal vehicles very easily.

There is usually one or two red warnings per year Stephen. Winds are peaking here now and its nasty but not exceptional, west wales and north west england are going to get it bad it seems.

The last red warning was January last year in Wales for snow.. and with good reason as villages were cut off.

Nigel the winds are NOT peaking, and they wont peak in these areas mentioned in the red warnings by the Met-Office until after 6pm They are a few hours from peaking over SW England at the moment, but this is not where the strongest winds are forecast to be.

Ireland had reports of structural damage, and power outages already.

This won't affect everyone, I understand that, but in the red warning it is likely to be as bad as it can get.

High winds are just off Lands End, 12:00, and on map I am quite calm by comparison, but actually gusting to 50mph already. Hate to think what the winds are like in the squall front, or if the sting jet kicks in.

Yep the metoffice got that wrong although they should be peaking for me now. Its certainly highest winds so far for me.
I was a bit worried about my tunnels but they seem to holding solid, if the wind was a bit more southerly they would have been in trouble.
No sign of any structural damage though , but we are pretty accustomed to winds here so everything is pretty hardened to it.

Blown over already here, the strong winds lasted an hour at most. The dangerous bit here was on the leading edge of the centre. Passed very quickly though. Hope it does same for everybody else.

Everton and Man City games cancelled due to weather. That never happens.

Apparently Ness Botanic Gardens up the road got some hefty damage from the storm, so they've had to close for at least today - I was going to go down there actually, but was stopped in my tracks by a information tab on their website saying they've closed due to storm damage.

Annoying, as it is at times like this when the opportunities for seed collecting from windblown branches, cones, etc., are at their best!
