February and Winter Statistics
February and Winter Statistics
It's quite an unusual one tonight, they will be available in just over an hours time. Just have to wait until midnight to ensure things don't change.

Re: February and Winter Statistics
I've has a 0.4c so far this month, its 1.7c currently so should be OK for the month but it will drop below 0c unless we get some cloud.

February 2014 Statistics
February was a month that was fairly benign from those that preceded them, except for one final storm around Valentines Day and the snow snowfall of the season that occurred on the 11th, however the snow did not settled and it only lasted around 5 minutes. There was a fair bit of rain, without it being nearly as wet as January. Again this month will be noted for the absence of air frost, which has been the big headline hitter this Winter.
Below are the statistics for my weather station during the month of February

Winter 2013-14 Statistics and Summary
Winter 2013-14 will go down as one of the most memorable winters of perhaps any winter ever witnessed by man. The incessant violent storms, that saw widespread flooding, the exceptional low pressures recorded, plus the frequency of systems off the Atlantic. Further more, due to all the cloud, wind, and rain, this season will be known for it's lack of frost, ice, and snow, which in some parts were unprecedented. That is to say this winter will go down in the annals of Meteorology as perhaps the most famous winter, surpassing that of other memorable winters such as 1947, 1963 and 1988. On a personal level, winter of 2013-14 wasn't quite a record breaker, in that frost-free years have occurred before (2006-7), but whilst we didn't achieve a completely frost-free ticket, we did see a cool, but benign winter in terms of temperatures. The only snowfall of the winter occurred on Febuary 11th, and rainfall whilst high was not record breaking.
Below are the statistics for my weather station during the Winter season of 2013-14.
Mean Maximum: 9.6C
Mean Minimum: 4.0C
Overall Mean: 6.8C
Seasonal Rainfall total: 264.0mm

Lowest daily maximum temperature: 4.5C (30th January)
Highest daily minimum temperature: 9.7C (23rd February)
Lowest daily minimum temperature: -0.7C (26th December)
Days with Ground Frost: 14
Days with Air Frost: 1
Days of falling Sn*w: 1
Days of lying Sn*w: 0

Re: February and Winter Statistics
All in all a great winter indeed for the plants.. I personally have had a great Winter, and thankfully the first air frost has held off until the other side of midnight, which makes winter 2013-14 look quite special... and that's when you consider Ive had some of the lower temperatures this winter.. so other people will be just as surprised at their own stats I think.
Re: February and Winter Statistics
2006-2007 wasnt frost free for me Stephen. This is the first. The MET say 6th warmest winter since records began, considering the lack of frost i thought it would rank higher.
Re: February and Winter Statistics
yes amazingly mild but not particularly warm I remember feb maximums in the 1990,s of 16-18c.one year possibly 1997 I had 19c on valentines day .I guess the air was moving far too much to warm up much this year stirring it up like goldilocks porridge not too hot !not too cold! but just right
Re: February and Winter Statistics
February did a good job with being warmer then January, if this will be a trend this then I will be happy. February have been mild and sunny, but wetter then average. February 2014 is now my mildest since I started recording, it is just a little milder (0,2C) then the old record from 2007. If you look to official weather stations it is the 4th mildest february since 1901.

Re: February and Winter Statistics
Here in Malta February has also been above average & many days were dry, the only reason the rainfall came in around average was due to two particularly wet days...

Feb 2014: (based on Wunderground Kensington; my garden is warmer on sunny days)
Low 2.8C
Hi 14.3C
Mean 7.6C
I can't post Winter statistics because winter - like maturity - is a fuzzy term that doesn't have a clear beginning or end, but the overall mean for Dec, Jan, Feb was 7.5C.

Re: February and Winter Statistics
a bit of a wild claim Stephen. I'm sure that in the last 43,000 years Cro-magnon man has been around there must have been more memorable winters. Middle of the last ice age when Neanderthal man died out must have been pretty memorable.stephenprudence wrote:
