Spell Checking - Finally installed and working

Post by Aidan Brown » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:42 pm

Hi everyone

I've managed to find a spell checker that works well (at last - they are quite hard to find :D ). You can run the spell checker by clicking the link
Spell Checker Image - Checked By Google's Spelling API
below the box you write your post in.

Please note that this spell checker is powered by Google so your post will be sent to Google for spell checking then sent back to you generating the replacement options. This shouldn't make any difference to your ability to use it as all of the posts can be indexed by Google anyway for the Google search.

Thanks Aido. There do however continue to be problems with correcting text within the box. I can now only use backspace from the cursor position and can't reposition the cursor. If I find an error three lines up then I have to delete back to there. Is this just me doing something stupid

Same for me too Guy. Cursor will not move , so I am having to use the arrows again.

I have used the Spell checker a few times this morning and it works a treat icon_thumleft Trouble is if you have spelt a word wrong it gives you several choices to pick from...........how do you know what one is right if you can't spell

Unfortunately this is what happens when things are implemented without testing, but as there was such a pressure for a spell checker we just went for it. Now it seems like something is broke again. Try downloading Firefox browser as mine is fine.
Best regards

Yep the problem seems to be an IE issue.

I'm a highlighter reader (ie I select text on screen when I'm reading it), and it annoyed me all day at work (we have to use IE).

Now I'm home on Google Chrome all is well.

Oh have noticed a "echo '';" at the bottom of every page, looks like some debug code still hanging around.

I'm on IE7 on the desk top and currently cant highlight text or move the cursor except with the arrows.

(I'm not moaning just helping with the bug testing)

a random glitch that has appeared is that if you have a section of text as below

Code: Select all

some text .... him .... some text .... im
it will pick up the spelling mistake in im (wanting to change it to I'm) but for some reason it searches for the 1st occurrence of those letters so in the case above it would result in

Code: Select all

some text ..... hI'm ......some text .... im
i need to look into how to fix this but at the moment i'm not sure how it works completely

*** FIXED ***

I was using IE7 and using the mouse to select text wasn't working.

I have Google Spell checker, but found that now when I do a spell check it will not allow me to continue from where I left off, and now I can't copy and Paste off the forum now, I take it this is all related to the same IT problem your talking about Aido?
I believe I am running on IE7 how do I find this out?

i've been trying to fix the things that broke when the spell checker went in.

The current situation is that if you use firefox or similar browsers everything works as it should :D .

if your using IE then there are two glitches i havent worked out yet. So for IE users:

should be able to move around the posting box with the mouse cursor or whatever
change text colour
add image tags etc ok.
you should be able to paste and copy from the text-box now as this was related to the moving the cursor around the text box.

The only thing that doesn't work properly at the moment is inserting emotion images like :D. the problem is that wherever you place the cursor the image code is always added at the end and that with the spell checker it will only correct one word at a time. if you click to correct the second word it wont actually change it. if you click the spell check link again it will work.

these problems are not being fixed until a week or two's time probably now as i've really got to get on and do my final year project. If i fix them before i'll post something on here to let you know. if anyone needs the old functionality back without the spell checker then you can change the board style on the site to using the etech green ie6 theme here
