Palm growth

Post by jungle jas »

Hi Everyone
This is my first post on the site as I am new to the exotic garden malarkey. Ihave the following palms in my garden: fortunei, wagnerinaus, cerifera, eriospatha with some robusta and draco seedlings grown from seed brought back from the Canaries. The last two will be brought indoors for the winter. Can anyone tell me how many leaves I can exprect from a strongly growing palm in a growing season and at what temperature will they stop growing in the autumn. Many thanks

Growth from my palms this year...

4 foot Trachycarpus F in the ground for 3 years... 8 fronds and opening a 9th.
5.5 foot Trachycarpus Wag in the ground 6 months... 3 fronds and one new spear.
6 foot chamearops humilis in the ground 5 months... 3 fronds.
3 foot brahea armata in a pot 2 years... 3 fronds.
3 foot livistona australis in a pot one year... 5 fronds.
5 foot Washy robusta in a large pot for two years... 10 fronds and counting.

My trachys normally stop growing during november and start up again march/april.

Hi and Welcome! icon_salut

It varies a lot but palms grow anything from 1/2 leaf to 20ish leaves per year in the uk.
(Huge margin for error in the above statement)

Hi Jungle jas, and welcome to the forum icon_salut

Most palms are very slow growing when small, and speed up notably when almost mature width, and in the ground. Potted palms are slower generally.

Of the palms you list Washingtonia will be by far the fastest given right conditions, with slow growth commencing at about 15C, up to motorin' at 30C. My big (10ft mature width) Washingtonia is on it's 16th leaf this year. It grows up to November for me. In the warmer summer of 2008 it grew 20 leaves in the season.
Best regards
Dave
