I'm sure people will add to the list. Do you mean hardy or are you also including annuals that will grow well?

My hardy backbone plants are

trachycarpus wagerianus (minature windmill palm)
Phyllostachus nigra ( black bamboo)
Tetrapanex rex
Acuba Japonica (spotted laurel)
Arbutus enedo ( strawberry tree)
Yucca Gloriosa

A little more marginal

Cordyline Austalis (Cabbage Palm)
Chamerops humilis (Mediterrean palm)
Musa basjoo ( hardy japanese banana)

Well that's the list started!

hi Mandy, try and keep the wet off your aeoniums and agaves. not many aeoniums will take much in the way of freezing temps but you up your chances immensely with a ventilated perspex type cover.polythene is too damp.pretty similar for agaves too although there are some quite tasty tough ones out there will take some abuse

Hi Mandy, a bit late  but welcome icon_salut

.... so it seems you have a hardy backbone already in place, but I can't see that you mention which bananas and Elephants Ear. There is the hardy banana basjoo that can be planted out, and quite a few that can be planted for summer then overwintered in a greenhouse/conservatory/indoors.

The Elephant Ear is either a Colocasia or Alocasia and none are really hardy although some Colocasia may resprout again in early summer.
Best regards
Dave
