Colocasia Gigantea
Colocasia Gigantea
Hello,
I wanted to post a couple of photos of my Colocasia Gigantea (Thailand Giant) from last fall. I live in Chicago USA and grew the plant from a 4 inch pot. The largest leaf measured 4.5 x 6.5 feet.

What a beauty......
And the colocasia is great too
Glad you joined us......you can see what a struggle it is for us over here in the UK to grow our tropicals.

Welcome Stephan
A very good Thai Giant you have there That is what I aspire to
I have 2 but only a fraction of the size of yours. and they went backwards over winter to just one petiole each. Started to grow now on a heat mat, until spring arrives.

Welcome, and thanks for showing us you beautiful garden and spectacular plant.
Re: Colocasia Gigantea
Thanks for the great responses. I'm lucky that our summers here are warm and usually wet. I'm able to grow Colocasia, Canna and Castor bean plants, as well as 30 types of Dahlias, so I can give myself the feel of a tropical holiday without leaving my yard!

Re: Colocasia Gigantea
I forgot to include in my post how impressed my wife and I were with the great tropical plants you are growing in the UK. Our weather has been as poor as yours recently- snow and cold (14 degrees Fahrenheit) this week. I'm sure you are looking forward to getting in your gardens as much as we are.

Re: Colocasia Gigantea
That looks great Stephan a formal exotic style garden. Those Canna beds are amazing. Most over here, including me, have a more informal, maybe even chaotic , jungly style, Most here aren't big enough to have the formal style.
Although UK is 8 to 17 degrees further north than you, we can normally rely on mild Atlantic weather most of our winter, but this year there has been a permanent blocking highs over Scandinavia giving Arctic NE winds, or even worse over Greenland, pulling down northerly winds straight from the North Pole Unfortunately no sign of change for the foreseeable future here.
