Shade seems to increase frond size long term, but its not the only way to increase the fronds. I would give it a few light feed of a high nitrogen feed next spring before it fronds, this should promote foliage growth. Plenty of water. Really you want the fronds to be thick so it keeps its shape whilst it grows.

It does look a healthy plant though. Just need to promote foliage growth.

When treeferns are brought over from Australia they come as logs with their own food store, during the first few years that suffices until they have grown roots to feed themselves anew.
I say yours is in the used up the food store and not quite established its roots.
It will come good in time, enrich the soil & feed it.

I agrees Steph. All the food is stored in its central rhizome and its important that you replace what is being used and lost.
