but would like to know other peoples experiences with this plant and more importantly is it likely to do well planted outdoors in my area ?Extremely rare in the uk this butia is as hardy as capitata but even more elegant as the leaves recurve back right towards the trunk.

Re: how hardy is BUTIA PARAGUAYENSIS???
Not very is the easiest answer.Capitata & eriospatha in my experience are tough, mine have survived around -9c with no or minimal damage, but I've never had a decent sized paraguayensis & one for £20 in a litre pot ain't going to very big.Check the site again, last time I looked they weren't available.

Re: how hardy is BUTIA PARAGUAYENSIS???
I had a paraguayensis grown from seed many years ago, it made a decent size and survived a couple of winters outside but not the 08/09 winter.
I was begining to think it was as hardy as the other Butias but now not so sure.
I wont try another unless a giveme or a real bargain pops up.

I know you don't believe in zone hardiness for plants this was a 9b...Yes I know Ade before you say it...you like to see hardiness yourself rather then....
It is a nice shade of green though and I would have snapped up a couple if they had been available or still were.

Same here Paul, i have one about the same age and it is quite slow only pushing a few leaves a year. Worth having for the butia collection though., i'll be on the look out for a larger one this year.

I'll say it for him Mo Zone 9b is Fort Pierce in Florida, 27 degrees North (same as Gran Canaria) and the climate is....... bloody warm compared to herethemes wrote:I know you don't believe in zone hardiness for plants this was a 9b...Yes I know Ade before you say it.
Coldest month is January with ave Max 23.2C and ave Min 10.5C This is why USDA Zones are rubbish for UK.
Best regards

Craig, you got that quote from amulree exotics website didn't you?
butia paraguyensis is just as hardy as capitata (least, that's what i read)
zone 9b is also located in southern tip of gower, and tip of peninsulas st davids and milford haven aswell as in tenby (wales coverage at least, cannot remember rest of uk)
