Best hardy evergreen bamboo

Post by Tom2006 »

I have some large gaps due to the deaths of my tree ferns. I am looking to fill the gaps with very hardy evergreen bamboo. I have some black bamboo but would like something different. What should I go for please?
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

There are loads to choose from Tom, but one of my favourites has got to be Fargesia robusta because it is very reliable, easy to grow and it grows pretty fast too. It is also very upright and makes a great screen or useful in a small garden .

Similar to robusta but a little more ornamental imo ....

Fargesia scabrida - often labelled 'Asian Wonder'

Mine has lost half of its leaves this winter and looks quite sad at the moment :(

It is a nice big clump though, so hopefully it will come good again this summer.

As for the bamboo I would go for Fargesia scabrida or robusta. As Lazlo mentions above it is a wonderful bamboo and was totally untouched by this winter.

Check out jungle giants website for some more ideas. There is a whole lot of different hardy bamboo out there as well as the ones that you find in the diy sheds which can be great value for money but they rarely offer anything but pseudosasa japonica, phyllostachys aurea, nigra etc

Agreed.

Especially if you want something slightly different.

How about .... Phyllostachys vivax f. aureocaulis

Amazing yellow canes, can grow to huge proportions with good thick canes, and in terms of hardiness .... ours sailed through this last winter with no damage.
