I've had trouble getting one established and am on my third try.

This winter has killed of the top foot of a 5ft stem, but I think there is a side bud forming below that.

It seems to me that some people have them and they grow well and spread, and others of us can't get them to go at all.

I haven't worked out what we do differently though!

Chad.

If mine survived such long and very cold winter yours should be ok too.

I have a feeling that mine is a goner unless it springs up again from some roots.

I'll be digging it out this weekend anyway.

Like Kris, mine has a 1ft woody trunk. The one leaf which has sat dormant all winter has wilted in the last week but it's making way for two new leaves. I'm pleased about this because it's it's first winter outside having grown it on for 2 or 3 years first. Although it's in a sheltered spot, I haven't protected the plant and we had ground frost of -14.5C. One thing may have helped - a generous mulch of composted bark. I suppose this counts as frost protection.

Mine in the front garden has five 4ft stems. The growing point on three have survived and have started to grow. The other two have rotted at the top and I am waiting to see where the buds form. The 6ft single stem in the back garden has lost the growing point too. It has some new pups emerging around the base which I will remove and pot up when they get a bit bigger.
