hardy plants from Tenerife

Post by palm lad »

just wondering if anybody can give me names of any hardy exotic or exotic-looking flowering Climbers and plants, Succulents and Trees or Shrubs (preferably evergreen!) that come from or grow all around Tenerife or the Canary Islands..

got some future design idea in mind to have a garden with plants from the Canaries. (Tenerife being our no.1 holiday destination!) 8)

i know theres the "bougainvillea" climber but isnt hardy enough

cheers, PL :D

Hiya Palm Lad,

Nice idea having a Canary Island garden! Tenerife has loads of fascinting plants, but not that much that could be called hardy here in the UK I suppose. Phoenix canariensis_CIDP, Echium wildprettii etc are borderline but always worth a try if you can provide the correct microclimate.

For something different, how about some woodwardia ferns? They grow in the Anaga Mountains on tenerife. They'd also need some shelter etc, but should be grown more often I always think.

I'm off to tenerife this Autumn. Here are a few pics from my week last year:
