I had a count up today and I still have about 20 large potted plants to protect... :?
All going into the garage this year, and cycads into the unheated conservatory.

Only protection to planted out will be Dicksonia, trunked Yucca and Cycas Revolutas, everything else will have to 'man up'... icon_thumright

If we are due to drop to 0C or just below the fleece will be onto of the Dicksonia antarctica and my very young Trachycarpus seedlings will go into the shed other than that everything will stay out. I think its the -4C and below that things start to get worrying for quite a few things.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

If you have 17cm diameter trunks on 2 year palms that is pretty good going. What are you feeding them on..... steroids

2 year palms would normally have about a 5cm diameter trunk, which, using 2-pie-R, would be approx 16cm circumference.

i'd be putting sago away very soon if in pot, closely followed by washy (but they like light).

save chammies and trachies til mid/late november

the nana will hardly grow now. you could chop leaves off and give cuts a chance to "heal" before the big wrap-up.

you could tie fronds of tree ferns up and bung some straw in the crown. you could also get the cage ready for further protection - it will save efforts when the weather really turns. early nov you can complete the wrapping job.

Reading this thread on cycad sago and the advice I got last yr is different,
The advice was not to store in garage but keep outdoor for light and only bring indoor on coldest Nights

There is more than one way to skin a cat!

I have overwintered the same cycas revoluta in my unheated garage for the two previous (very cold winters) with no probs. The leaves stayed fully green throughout.

Simba wrapped up his in the garden with lots of fleece and therefore these were also kept in dark conditions and survived.

I did absolutely nothing to it between October 1st 2010-11th March 2011. It went in quite damp.

my sago is now in the shed, i think i'll leave it in there as opposed to struggling to get it into the house, soil is currently very wet too. Is your garage pitch black?

No it has a North facing window and I leave the door open in the day time.
