Nick, that looks like winter damage to me. The fact it is getting bigger suggests that the trunk is rotting.Nick wrote:I will get you the photo's tomorrow once I am up and about as on nights, the place releases a brown colour liquid if I put the hose pipe onto it, so much so it's made a bit of hose pipe that was yellow go brown that I use to tie it to it's support, as you will see in the photo's once taken it will be good to know what it is once and for all.
I would try treating with h2o2 to try and clean it up. If this doesn`t work you may have to chop and reroot the section of trunk above the wound.
Cam, I wouldn`t worry about the moss/algae unless it starts effecting growth. If you don`t like it or it is spoiling the appearance of your Dicksonia antarctica then scrape it off.

I'd go with that too Nick but don't rush out with your axe, treat it firstpdid wrote:

Carmen, i got loads of algae / moss on mine, looks more natural imo and it's probably what they get in their natural habitat. Will take pics tomorrow if i remember.
Another thing it could be .....germinated spore. It's a long shot but it could be. I've seen pics of germinated spore that look something like that. See how it develops. I noticed on my small Dicksonia antarctica today, loads of small fernlings.
Re: Mouldy tree fern

Re: Mouldy tree fern
Thanks Arlon, so it looks like it's winter damage then.
Carminthegarden, what type of cat your is it, your holding there in your pic , if you don't mind me asking? It would be good if yours was lots of baby ferns growing on your trunk of your Dicksonia antarctica

Re: Mouldy tree fern
Nick,
i buy 35% food grade and then dilute by ten parts water to give 3.5% solution.
Seeing as you're treating just the tree fern at the mo, why not buy 500ml of 35% and dilute it by 10 parts and you'll have approx 5 to 6 litres of ready made solution that you can store and keep for future use as well

Re: Mouldy tree fern
Thank you Arlon, will look at your thread and place an order, had no idea about how to dilute it
Re: Mouldy tree fern
Hi order placed for 500mls at 35%, will mix up with enough water to make 5 Lts, so hope it will last for as long as I need it the hole is about 3/4 in deep with 3 holes of the same depth, so will clean up then spray, and see what happens then.
