I think this is completely natural, I would imagine the tree was blown over in the wind, ended up an an angle and continued to grow. Eventually the weight of the crown dragged it towards the ground and from their it twisted back up towards the light

Yep, it was probably growing sideways to escape the tree so already had a bent trunk, fell over like Trudy said and then doubled itself to go back up, and extended its own lifetime in the process because all palms have a height limit due to the diameter of its vascular tissue - height of a meniscus ( although osmosis is a factor too) so ultimately this plant might be dead had it not fallen over.
