Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
Bought some Ricinus Communis ( Zanzi Palm) seeds just before Christmas. Have never grown these before but understand they grow pretty big and pretty rapid. Hoping to get a good display from these this summer before they die off. From pics i`ve seen they look very tropical. But when would you say is the best time to start propagating these and does anyone have any tips for these plants??

Early April to set out in late April.

Re: Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
Late March/early April under cover - greenhouse or indoors - don't plant out till all danger of frost has passed and soil is warm - early June is safe. April is far too early for the UK.
Re: Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
It's always advisable to wash your hands after sowing Ricinus.
Re: Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
Give them plenty of light so they don't become leggy. Pot them up regularly before planting out because if they become root bound it slows them down and they don't seem to recover easily.

Cheers for that guys. I know all about washing hands after sowing. The packet they were delivered in had ` POISON ` written all over it.

Cool Real Ale. I live in Rhyl too, as you can see. If we get any seeds at all from them we should do a seed exchange so we can both grow each variety . Be handy to know how well yours do compared to mine.

Re: Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
Whats the best / most reliable germination method for these seeds ?
Re: Ricinus seeds. When to germinate?
I have grown the zanzi and communis for the last couple of years, found them very easy to germinate. Just popped them on a heat mat, keep moist and within a week they usually pop out. Easy peasy
BTW The zanzi are defo the ones if you want huge leaves, mine got to 8 ft+ this year, but in my opinion the communis are more striking, having a reddish tinge to them.
