Sakhalin Basjoo and normal Basjoo flower
Sakhalin Basjoo and normal Basjoo flower
Is there a difference between the normal Basjoo and the Sakhalin Bssjoo?
Jean-luc first introduced the Sakhalin Basjoo and said there was enough genetic difference between the two to suggest that there not from the same clone, although it is know commonly excepted they both originated from China. My dads Sakhalin Basjoo flowered last year and his next door neighbours Normal basjoo flowered this year, they have both been grown in the same soil type but the flowers are a different colour. Is it normal for Basjoo flowers to vary in colour any way.? They may also be the furthest north that Basjoo has flowered in the UK but I’m not certain about that.

Tony-I always thought that the Sakhalin thing was a bit of myth until David Constantine (Koba Koba) told me that their was a difference. Furthermore he claims there is a difference in the variegated forms. Can't see your first pic at the moment but it's all fascinating stuff. I think you may claim the record for a northmost flowering Basjoo not under glass.

Re: Sakhalin Basjoo and normal Basjoo flower
sure. i'll take a pic tomorrow. I was a bit disappointed by the rather boring colour I must admit
Re: Sakhalin Basjoo and normal Basjoo flower
Mine were/are the same as the second pic, the supposed sakhalin basjoo but mine were bog standard basjoos.
Im happy for them not to flower any more, suckers just dont grow fast enough to replace the dead stems.

Re: Sakhalin Basjoo and normal Basjoo flower
Tony, Mine flowered a couple of years ago and it was the yellow flower but I thought mine were normal Basjoo not Sakhalin.
I do have a sakhalin given to me by Grub but thats a long way off flowering yet.
I think Kev posted a picture of the red /brown flower on the old forum and that made me think it wasn't a basjoo and he had got it wrong. Seems I was wrong as mine is different to his.

As far as I know I have the standard Basjoo's....I have given pups to some of the neighbours and here is one of them in flower as you can see its very yellow in appearance.
Hope this helps on some way!

This was my Basjoo last year. Very reddish, and pygmy
Best regards

Mine originally came from Adrian Halls garden centre about 5 or 6 years ago, they were simply labelled as Musa Basjoo. It does seem that there is a quite a bit of variability by looking at the pics posted so far.
