Musa zaifui becomes a highly desirable banana

Post by Dave Brown »

This small banana continues to look better day by day, and has to be one of the more elegant, near hardy species. The stem isn't frost hardy, but Palmer (Tony Palmer) had one come back from ground level after -6C. The leaves are more tear resistant than basjoo so looks less battered after the daily gale.

Is the red stem a characteristic of the species.

This is still relatively new to western cultivation so not sure if a species trait, but is certainly evident on mine

Could be worth planting out and wrapping the pseudostem?

Well it looks very interesting, it should be more widely planted.

It looks a real beaut. And tear-resistant leaves in a windy garden worth their weight in gold! icon_thumleft
