What banana seeds have you grown

Post by B19bst »

So what types of bananas have you grown from seed and succeeded.

I have grown so far from seed,

Griersonni
Snow banana

I have just put around 15 different types in the propagater to see how they do.

Here are a few I can remember off the top of my head. Haha

Musa vooni
Giersonni's
Sikkimensis
Giant ventriosum
Thomsonni
Monkey fingers
Snow banana
Rock banana
Musa textilles
Burmese blue
Musa hirta
Musa sakaiana
Musa bauensis
Candy Cane Banana - Musa campestris var. limbangensis
Miri Swamp Banana - Musa campestris var. miriensis
Swamp Banana - Musa campestris var. campestris
Musa acuminata
Musa nagensium
Musa itinerans Yunnan banana

Think that's it. I enjoy trying to grow things. Fingers crossed for them.

So come on what have you guys tried out of that lot and any other types.

I have never grown any Musas is there any that are unusual varieties but easy to grow. What do you need to grow them from seed?

Most I would say are not easy. I have always found palms easier to germinate than banana's.

If you don't have a propagater then try in you airing cupboard in vermiculite and sandwich bags. Thing is most bananas need 25-30c and some 35c.

I doubt many of mine will germinate but it's a bit of fun. If they do then I can see a sale coming. Haha.

Ensete are dead easy and germinate with cooler temps, I sow Ensete into a multiP and perlite mix. Sealed tub straight on top of the digi box, Musa prefer fluctuating temps to germinate. icon_thumright

It makes sense to buy wholesale quantities as part of a group over buying small packets though.

Enetes:

Ventricosum
Glaucum

Ventricosum has given me three plants in twenty years from about six separate sowings
Glaucum - nothing in two sowings

Musas:

sikkimensis
S, 'Daj Giant'
cheesmanii
velutina
yunnensis
zebrina
nagensium
Helen's hybrid

Zero germination from the above, most of them twice, this after religiously following the recommended germination procedures.

The common ones are hard to germinate ... I doubt the rare ones are easier :(

But you might get lucky ... I bought 8 seeds and 4 grew ... and that was the start of my Exotic Garden Habit

Rough prices are £1.40 for 10, £9.00 for 100. Germination is reckoned to be around 10%, so I would suggest that you buy 50 or more, rather than 10.
